“I know…I am being easy on her! She’s just got to learn that another little baby means that our attentions are split now. She’d like a new toy anyway and it’s the perfect day to show her off. Everyone at the ministry says how beautiful she is.”

“She’ll learn, but she’s a little baby. She won’t get everything right away. She’ll understand eventually.” I kissed Aurae’s head. “They’re both so beautiful aren’t they?”

I turned to my wife. “You listened? No-one else heard, did they?” I asked, scanning the surrounding area for onlookers. “Everyone will think I’ve gone mad or soft, one of the two.” Gwen stirred against my robes but she was quickly comforted when I kissed her forehead again.

“No one heard. Relax.” I said, kissing his cheek. Everyone else is far too busy to worry about you.” I tickled Gwen’s belly and she flopped her small arms around and coughed. I wiped her mouth and kissed her hand. 

“I never thought it was possible for a cough to be cute but Gwen has that nailed. She has the most adorable cough I’ve ever heard…” I said, gazing at my younger daughter with love in my eyes. Aurae was getting tired of being second best again and started stamping loudly as she began to yell. “Aurae! Stop. Now. Or I’m taking your pink dragon away.”

That didn’t help. Aurae began to scream louder and babble angrily to herself and shake her head. I picked her up and held her in my arms. “hey, hey,” I said. “why are you screaming love?” I kissed her cheek and placed my forehead with hers.

“It’s just because her sister is getting all of the attention. She’ll calm down.” I was never really going to take her dragon away, there was no way I could do that to my daughter. Gwen’s eyelids flickered as I held her, the fingers on her left hand tightened around a strand of my hair and she put it into her mouth.

“Be calm. Daddy still loves you, pretty girl.” I said kissing her cheek. She babbled angrily and glared at Gwen. “It’s not Gwen’s fault. She would act the same way if she was born first and you were the new bundle of joy. You are both special.” 

“Aurae, calm down,” I said forcefully. Gwen settled into my arms as I began to rock her. “I’ll buy you something nice for being a good girl, how does that sound?” I asked Aurae and then looked down at her. She seemed happier about that idea.

“Would you like a new toy, love?” I asked her and she bounced about and smiled. I looked up at Lucius. “You can’t buy her a new toy to shut her up.” I said. “She’s used to being the only baby, go easy on her, love.”
